The simplest answer is: NAD+ has an important biological role in energy metabolism. That biological role has not translated into strong evidence that NAD+ injections or IV therapy cause clinically meaningful weight loss.
The Short Answer: Does NAD+ Cause Weight Loss?
There is currently no strong evidence that NAD+ injections or NAD+ IV therapy produce meaningful, sustained weight loss. A 2023 systematic review and meta-regression pooled 22 treatment arms involving more than 5,000 participants who received NAD-related precursors such as nicotinic acid or nicotinamide. Researchers found a very small average reduction in BMI of approximately 0.19 kg/m². However, there was no statistically significant reduction in actual body weight. That distinction matters. A small average BMI shift across multiple studies should not be interpreted as: “NAD+ makes you lose weight.” The interventions also involved oral precursor compounds rather than standard NAD+ injections or IV infusions.
Why Is NAD+ Associated With Metabolism?
NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It is a naturally occurring coenzyme found throughout the body. NAD+ participates in important cellular processes involving:
This scientific role helps explain why NAD+ frequently appears in discussions about:
- energy metabolism
- oxidation-reduction reactions
- mitochondrial function
- cellular signaling
- and enzymes that depend on NAD+ as a substrate.
- metabolic health
- aging
- exercise
- energy
- and longevity.
But there is a major difference between: “NAD+ participates in cellular energy metabolism.” and: “Giving someone NAD+ causes weight loss.” The first statement reflects established biology. The second requires clinical-outcome evidence. Current research does not establish it.
Cellular Energy Is Not the Same Thing as Fat Loss
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in NAD+ marketing.

A person may feel more energetic, less energetic, or notice no obvious change after a wellness treatment. None of those subjective experiences prove that body fat is being reduced.
NAD+, NAD+ Injections, NAD+ IV, NMN and NR Are Different
Online articles often blur several different products under the term “NAD.” That can create misleading conclusions.

A 2026 systematic review examined 113 NAD-related studies, including 33 human intervention studies. Oral NR and NMN reliably changed NAD-related biomarkers, but human clinical effects on metabolic, vascular and other wellness outcomes were variable and frequently null or specific to individual endpoints. Most importantly, the review found no eligible outcomes trials testing IV or intramuscular NAD+ itself for anti-aging or wellness outcomes. That evidence gap also limits claims about weight loss.
What Does the Research Say About NAD+ and Body Weight?
The evidence is mixed and highly dependent on the compound being studied.
2023 Systematic Review: Small BMI Change, No Significant Weight Loss
The 2023 systematic review examined randomized clinical trials involving NAD+ precursors. Across 22 treatment arms involving 5,144 participants, researchers reported:
- average BMI change: −0.19 kg/m²
- no statistically significant overall body-weight reduction
- no significant change in leptin
- an increase in adiponectin.
The interventions were mainly nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, not NAD+ injections or NAD+ IV therapy. So while the BMI finding may be scientifically interesting, it does not establish injectable NAD+ as a weight-management therapy.
What Happened When Researchers Studied NR in Men With Obesity?
One especially useful trial challenges the simple “NAD boosts metabolism” narrative. Researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 40 sedentary men with obesity. Participants received oral nicotinamide riboside or placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers directly examined several outcomes highly relevant to weight loss, including:
The findings were notable. NR supplementation did not significantly improve:
- body composition
- resting energy expenditure
- insulin sensitivity
- fat breakdown
- lipid oxidation
- glucose metabolism.

This does not prove NAD-related compounds can never affect metabolism. It demonstrates something more important: Increasing activity in an NAD-related biological pathway does not automatically produce measurable fat loss or an increase in metabolic rate.
What Did the 2024 Metabolic-Syndrome Review Find?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated 19 randomized controlled trials involving NAD+ precursors. The analysis found reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides, but the intervention did not significantly affect most of the other metabolic-syndrome outcomes evaluated. The researchers also rated much of the evidence as very low to low quality, citing risk of bias, small participant numbers, imprecision and indirectness. That again supports cautious interpretation. NAD-related biology remains scientifically interesting. The clinical results are far less dramatic than many online marketing claims suggest.
What About NAD+ IV Therapy for Weight Loss?
There is currently no high-quality clinical evidence establishing NAD+ IV therapy as an obesity or weight-loss treatment. That means NAD+ IV should not be marketed as:
- a fat-burning drip
- an appetite-suppressing IV
- a metabolism accelerator
- an obesity treatment
- a weight-loss plateau breaker
- or an alternative to approved weight-management medication.
A 2026 review of intravenous NAD+ concluded that available human evidence remains sparse and primarily consists of small uncontrolled studies, observational research and limited case reports. The authors concluded that evidence remains insufficient to establish routine IV NAD+ use as evidence-based clinical practice and noted unresolved questions around effectiveness, durability and long-term safety. What About NAD+ Injections for Weight Loss?
The same limitation applies. There is not enough human clinical evidence to say that NAD+ injections produce significant or sustained weight loss. Evidence from:

- oral NMN
- nicotinic acid
- nicotinamide
- or animal research

Does NAD+ Increase Metabolism?
This question depends heavily on what someone means by “metabolism.” NAD+ absolutely participates in cellular metabolic processes. That does not mean NAD+ therapy has been shown to raise a person's resting metabolic rate enough to cause weight loss. The 12-week NR trial in men with obesity specifically examined resting energy expenditure. Researchers found no significant benefit. They also found no increase in:

Therefore, saying: “NAD+ boosts your metabolism” without explaining what that means can be misleading. A more accurate statement is: NAD+ participates in cellular energy metabolism, but current clinical evidence does not establish NAD+ injections or IV therapy as reliable methods for increasing metabolic rate or producing weight loss.
Does NAD+ Burn Fat?
There is no strong human evidence demonstrating that NAD+ IV therapy or NAD+ injections burn body fat. Fat metabolism involves many interconnected factors, including:
- calorie intake
- energy expenditure
- hormones
- muscle mass
- activity
- sleep
- medications
- genetics
- medical conditions
- and behavioral factors.
Describing NAD+ as a “fat-burning molecule” oversimplifies both the biology and the evidence.
Does NAD+ Suppress Appetite?
NAD+ is not an established appetite-suppressing treatment. There is no strong clinical evidence showing that NAD+ injections or IV therapy reliably reduce hunger, cravings or food intake in a way that produces sustained weight loss. This is another important difference between NAD+ and certain FDA-approved obesity medications.
NAD+ Is Not the Same as a GLP-1 Medication
NAD+ should not be described as: “a natural GLP-1 alternative.” These are fundamentally different interventions. NAD+ is a naturally occurring coenzyme involved in cellular metabolism. GLP-1 receptor agonists are medications designed to activate a specific hormone receptor and have been evaluated through large clinical-development programs for defined medical indications. What If You Lose Weight After Starting NAD+?
Weight can change for many reasons. Possible contributors include:
A weight change occurring after NAD+ does not prove that NAD+ caused it. This is especially important with short-term scale changes. Water balance can alter body weight without reflecting body-fat loss. If weight loss is:
- changes in food intake
- changes in fluid balance
- illness
- increased or decreased activity
- digestive symptoms
- stress
- medications
- other treatments
- or normal short-term fluctuation.
